Healthy Living Tips for Seniors

1. Stay Active

One of the most important things you can do for your health, no matter your age, is to stay active. Whether you enjoy doing pilates or you’d rather go for a leisurely bike ride, just get moving!

You can even do simple chair exercises – these are low-impact workouts that are easy to do, even for folks with limited mobility.

2. Eat a Healthy Diet

Aim for a diet that’s rich in vegetables, fruits, and lean proteins. This will give your immune system the boost it needs while also protecting against dangerous bacteria and viruses that can make you sick.

Plus, fruits and vegetables are great sources of antioxidants, which can help fight off cell damage and reverse some of the less than desirable effects of aging.

3. Supplement As Needed

You should be able to get most (if not all) of the nutrients you need from a healthy, balanced diet. However, when your regular mealtimes aren’t providing you with what you need, you may want to turn to supplements.

Certain supplements are recommended for all adults, including vitamin D, calcium, and vitamin B12. Talk to your doctor to find out which ones he or she might recommend for you.

4, Get Some Sleep

Sleep is critical when it comes to how well your body repairs itself. If you don’t get enough sleep, your body’s immune system won’t function properly  – and you just won’t feel your best.

Unfortunately, your likelihood of suffering from insomnia increases as you get older. Too little physical activity during the day or too much caffeine can both lead to sleeplessness, so talk to your doctor about how you can counteract these effects and get the rest you need.

5. Manage Your Stress

Chronic stress elevates the body’s production of the hormone cortisol. While cortisol is necessary for everyday functioning, too much of it can disrupt various functions in your body, including how well your immune system functions.

Everybody deals with stress in different ways. However, some good tips include setting reasonable expectations for yourself, spending time on your hobbies, and making time for your friends and family.

Take Charge of Your Own Health

There are plenty of other healthy living tips for seniors that you would implement in your life as you get older. Some of these will vary depending on your current state of health and your healthy living goals.

However, it’s important to be responsible for your own health. Don’t wait until you get sick to start living a healthier lifestyle. Wash your hands, visit your doctor for regular physicals, and take action. By following the tips above, you’ll stay healthier and be less likely to succumb to illness throughout the year.
