January 14, 2017 by Paul Vandyken Leave a Comment

Diabetes has become one of the rapidly increasing and most common medical conditions these days. There are many factors behind it such as unhealthy food intake, the lack of time for self-care and exercises, inappropriate daily routine and no planning ahead for you. For diabetic patients, exercise plays a major role in keeping the blood sugar levels under control. Yet, many people have been ignoring this fact for so long.

This might also reduce the insulin injectables you might need each day. Exercise also helps in boosting the immune system, losing weight and maintaining blood sugar which will eventually help you to stay healthy.

If you opt for high resistance training twice a week, it would help in lowering cholesterol, reducing weight and maintaining the hemoglobin A1C levels. Before you begin any exercise, you must consult your doctor for better advice.

Let’s have a look at the 5 great exercises for people with diabetes!

Table of Contents

  • 1)  Brisk Walking
  • 2)  Tai Chi Exercise
  • 3)  Weight Training
  • 4)  Yoga
  • 5)  Swimming

1)  Brisk Walking

Brisk walking is one of the oldest and widely known forms of exercise which offers the most benefits. If there is no set routine or exercise for you then the best you can do is start with walking. Walking is one form of exercise that never hurts, never gets outdated and is never harmful. It is mostly prescribed by doctors to diabetes patients. Brisk walking is a moderate-intensity exercise as it increases the heart rate slightly and will let you reach your desired target of maintaining good blood sugars. It is one of the few exercises which is perfect for almost everyone.

2)  Tai Chi Exercise

Tai Chi is not only a form of workout but a tradition for ancient Chinese people. This allows the participants to follow a series of movements which are performed in relaxed and slow motion. Along with slow movement,s deep breathing is also mandatory. This exercise maintains blood sugar levels and A1C levels and has proved to be very effective for diabetes patients.

It is the best way to reduce stress and add fitness to your life by improving balance and reducing nerve damage. Nerve damage often happens with people who do not have regular blood sugar and Tai Chi helps them in increasing their body’s strength and flexibility.

3)  Weight Training

Weight training is very important for maintaining healthy muscles. It is one of the most effective weight loss techniques, highly beneficial for diabetic patients and everyone around. It is not limited to a certain group of people but it is for everyone who wishes to strengthen the muscles. Muscle mass plays an important role in maintaining blood sugar levels.

The lower your muscle mass, the more difficult it would be to maintain your sugar levels. Therefore, you must plan for such workouts at least twice a week as per your consultant’s advice. You can try out weight lifting through free weights, machines or resistance bands; anything that suits you better.

4)  Yoga

Yoga is and will always be an effective form of exercise. It has been in the exercise world for ages and will continue to remain an important part of the exercise forever. It is the best-known stress reducer that helps diabetes patients maintain their blood sugar.

The long intervals, the slow motion and the pauses regulate the blood flow and help in maintaining a good level of sugar in the blood. When the patient is stressed, the blood sugar levels are bound to increase and take a leap ahead therefore, yoga must be made a part of your life to help in maintaining the levels of blood sugar.

5)  Swimming

Swimming is a low-impact exercise that is always refreshing and feels good no matter what. It is another form of aerobic exercise and an ideal one for diabetic patients since it does not stress your joints. It is a fun activity which everyone loves, be it alone or in groups. The joy of swimming itself is so energizing and powerful to release all the stress.

The effects of water on the body are less disturbing than walking and jogging. You might at times, feel a loss of sensation in your feet due to diabetes but for that, you can opt for the water shoes. These water shoes help people easily move around in the water.

Nevertheless, before you begin exercising, make sure to keep the levels of blood sugar checked by someone or yourself with the help of reliable devices in the market such as  Contour Next One. CONTOUR is famous for its authentic glucose monitoring products and quality-based relations with the customers. They are highly dedicated to improving their performance, the lives  and medical condition of patients with diabetes.
